Happy New Year!

2011 is a mere few hours away from retiring. And boy am I glad!! Personally, this year was not very exciting. Yes, I graduated college. Whipee! But other than that its has been quite a bore compared to previous months. Probably because my 2010 was awesome. On a more worldly level, 2011 kinda sucked as well. Tsunamis, earthquakes, flooding, hurricanes. Not fun.

Here's hoping that 2012 kicks 2011s booty! 2012 is the year of the London Olympics, the presidential election, the Euro cup, and hopefully a more peaceful world.

To all a Happy New Year! Hope everyone starts the year off right!!

Stephen Fry

I love Stephen Fry. I'll even admit that I might have become obsessed with him a bit in the last two weeks or so.

In my book, this man can do no wrong. Except maybe when the bad side of his bipolar disorder comes out.  Since I've never met, I have never had to experience it. In England, he is the host of a brilliantly funny game show called QI. The show is so popular in the country that it is on its 9th! season (or series as the Brits would call it). He has appeared in a number of good shows & movies. He was in V for Vendetta, Alice in Wonderland, Sherlock Holmes 2, the upcoming The Hobbit, Bones.

                                                                      Best Bits of QI

Originally he became famous for being part of a duo of comedians that entertained Britain in the early 1980s. A Bit of Fry and Laurie. Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. Yep, the guy who plays House on...House. Before he played a Vicodin-addicted narcisstic curmedgeon, Hugh Laurie played numerous roles in which he was an idiot or a transgender.

"Slightly Mad"

But back to Stephen Fry. He has even written books! Back in 2008 he wrote a book entitled "Stephen Fry in America". The book was to accompany a miniseries that was shown in Britain. Fry traveled all 50 states to learn what made America what it is. He learned what was unique about each state and why there is no one region that can fully define America.

In New Jersey, he visited Atlantic City. He was not fully pleased with the place. He even hated it more when he saw Donald Trump's "Taj Mahal".

"For taking the name of the priceless mausoleum of Agra, one of the beauties and wonders of the world. For that alone Donald Trump should be stripped naked and whipped with scorpions. Along the boardwalk, it is as if a giant toad has roped a butterfly."

And this is why I love Stephen Fry. He speaks his mind. He does not sugarcoat anything. If he doesn't like something, he will let you know. And he is able to say it in such a creative way. And I do rather enjoy the image of Donald Trump being stripped naked (including that thing that is on his head - that needs to go) and whipped with scorpions.

First outing in three days

So today's battle for who gets a mention in this baby blog is between a reference or two from "The Big Bang Theory" or my friends and our adventures.

My friends won by a loooo-hooong haul. I have been very very blessed with friends. I don't know how it happened but I am very grateful for it. Today I got to hang out with two of them. The always hilarious and unpredictable Angelina and the sweetheart of sweethearts Christine.

These two girls never seize to bore me or the stranger sitting next to us. The "stuff people say (or write)" quote of the day is came about in a CVS when the three of us came across another pathetically-looking cover of Cosmo.

"YOUR OTHER  G-SPOT!! (It's above your waist and every women has one)"
Angelina yells out "ITS THE NIPPLES!"
Needless to say, it was the nipples. Really Cosmo? You really need to come up with something new.
They need to create a new arousing body part for Cosmo to write about or adios magazine.

If you don't believe me, go to their website and you'll see something more pathetic than the magazine's latest "discovery".

Really? I don't think that there are many people out these who sit and religiously look at celebrities' lips. Sad. Sad. Sad.  :(

Birth of a blog

Hi. Hola. Bonjour! Welcome to yet another blog that has managed to enter itself into the Internet's history. This blog was born at 1:21 AM New York time after it kept its owner awake for a good hour or so. That owner is Svetlana.

Hi! That's me. I'm Svetlana. Pleasure to meet you. You tell me your story and I'll tell you mine. My brief  version is this - Born in Kyiv. Moved to Brooklyn at the age of 7. Had an awesome childhood in Brooklyn - thank you to many awesome people. Traveled a lot, thank you mommy travel agent. Studied danced with an magnificent group of girls and with some of the best and sweetest teachers (Merci Covenant Ballet). Stayed in NYC for College. YAY FORDHAM!! Studied abroad in London for part of senior year. Fell in love there (with the city and a boy - HI Joe!). Came back to NYC to graduate. Began looking for jobs and waited patiently for any responses while our country's unemployment rate slowly increased, bringing me slowly into a mini-depression. Now I am in the present...stuck at home with an upper respiratory infection and writing a blog.

The idea of having a blog has been scrambling around in my brain for months now. I've never really wanted to start one because I've always thought that blogs were primarily used by ordinary and extraordinary people writing their autobiographies. In my opinion, my life has never been that interesting for me to write about, let alone have others read about it. But it seems that in this day and age, a blog is almost a necessity. Especially in the field that I hope to eventually (*soon*soon*soon*) have a job and a career in.

Public Relations. An industry that is built on the word and image and sound etc etc etc. In all honesty, I have started this blog because I hope that it will be an asset to help me break into the PR industry. That and since graduating from college, I have not had to get very creative with my writing (cover letter excluded). Having a blog or anything that shows that you are even .000123531% creative can help anybody out in most industries. Since I hope to go into an industry notorious for press releases, I need to make sure that my writing is not completely rusty. So that if I ever to get the opportunity to write press releases or features, my writing does not read as if a kindergartener has written it. Ex. Barbie likes Ken again in place of "Mattel is pleased to announce that Barbie has had a change of heart. She has taken a liking to Ken once more.  Both of Barbie and Ken's marital statuses will be changed to 'in a relationship and its complicated'  on the eve of December 21, 2011." (Please don't judge extremely, it is near 2 am and I am still sick.)

What will this blog focus on primarily? This I have pondered for weeks. More and more so within the last few days while I've been bedridden and lazily watching TV. There is a lot of stuff on TV these days, as most people probably know. I've only let myself into watching reruns of shows. The Big Bang Theory tops my list. If you have not seen it, WATCH IT!! It is by far one of the funniest shows you'll ever see. You don't have to be a geek, a nerd, or a science major to understand the show. Believe me, you should see my grades in chemistry and physics. A basic knowledge of the English language will do. And possibly some knowledge of American pop culture.  But I digress. "Friends" comes in a close 2nd. Whoops. Back to the theme of the blog. I've thought of creating a food blog but then I realized that as of late I have not been very creative with my food preparations so that blog would die out pretty quickly. That and I'm a vegetarian and there is only so much you can do with vegetables. Then I've thought about a DIY blog. And then I looked over to my left and noticed that there were at least 3 projects that I started sometime mid-summer and have yet to finish (ADHD much?). A travel blog breezed through my thoughts like a soft wind on Waikiki beach. Then I remembered the tiny amount of bills that currently sit in my bank account and how they will not be multiplying by 100x anytime soon. Lack of money leads to lack of travel.

After thinking and thinking, I have come up with a theme - "Sh*t (or stuff) people say". As a New Yorker, I come across hundreds of people on a daily basis (whenever I feel like leaving my room). With those hundreds of people, I overhear a lot of things. Most of the time, it is not at all intentional. Sometimes I overhear things that make me ponder about the words that were just spoken. Unfortunately, I cannot think of anything at this moment. Thanks a lot, brain. But this shall be theme of my blog. Each entry will be a quote from something I overheard earlier that hour, day, or week. It all depends on how often I will be updating this blog.

*Phew* I think I shall stop writing now. Hopefully my brain is ready to shut down now so I can go to sleep within the seven minutes that it takes for one to normally fall asleep. To tomorrow! To hoping that it will bring me to an event that shall make my 2nd entry engaging and exciting! Good night.
